He placed something else, saying to himself "if it is discovered, I will know, and especially when I come back to put the bronze back, I will be sure that the cache has not been discovered".
For me that's what happened, which doesn't require dragging it through the mud. He was a human being who was afraid, he took precautions, and he died before he could return to put back the bronze Owl.
