01/02/2023 - Enregistrement n° 52 - 08:40 : SS - Not comparable with Masquerade - Max was a beginner

(Q – Gringos: well for example, let's take the Masquerade example. A player comes to look at the characters' eyes and look at the letters, that makes a perfect sentence for me, in a discord vocal, everyone would say “Ah yes, you found it” and there, that’s what I mean, I have the impression that it seems a little more vague, a little less precise…)

MB: I agree, Masquerade was made by someone who had… certainly Kit Williams had certainly worked out his thing well and so it works perfectly well. I always said that Max Valentin was a beginner, eh. I'm not saying that... I'm saying that he was indirectly inspired by Masquerade, I'm not saying that he did it as well or less well, and I'm saying that he did it a little differently and that his version it means that today we are where we are and when, moreover, I read messages which say “but if it has lasted for 30 years it is because it cannot be found”, it is false , it's 100% wrong to think that.
If it's been going on for 30 years, it's because for 30 years, there's been something that never happened on Masquerade. There were exchanges between the players and the designer, through Minitel, to begin with, that never happened for Masquerade. So the big difference, the major difference between Masquerade and the Golden Owl, is the fact that there were direct exchanges, through Minitel, but ultimately direct nonetheless, between the players and the designer of the puzzles, and the designer of the puzzles played a role that I think I have clearly defined in the two books that I published, in which I still tell a lot of things, a lot of things in fact.
The game designer played a role which means that today we rely on things that are linked to this role, but not linked to the design of the game. The whole problem is there today . Those who tend to consider, what many take for granted, as some, as absolutely sure, et cetera, for a certain number of elements, it is completely bogus, it is completely invented.
So I try, perhaps clumsily because it's not very obvious, but I try to refocus people by saying go back to your way of reasoning, review things clearly, differently and try to really reconsider the thing. from a simpler and more human angle on the one hand. Stop thinking that you are dealing with the brain of the century! Max Valentin was never an exceptional brain, he was an intelligent guy. So, when we start doing completely crazy things, we escape the sphere of understanding of Max Valentin. Max Valentin could never have done that.
